LHDA Hands Over Some Assets to Lesotho Mounted Police Service
Maseru - 11 February, 2004
The Chief Executive of Lesotho Highlands Development Authority ( LHDA), Mr. Liphapang Potloane, today handed over 3 vehicles, 2 boom gates and shelters to the Commissioner of Lesotho Mounted Police (LMPS) at a ceremony which was held at the Lesotho Police Headquarters in Maseru.
Collaboration between LHDA and LMPS began during the construction of Katse dam and related works ( Phase 1A) in early 1990s to enhance security as well as enforcing the rule of law in the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) area. The LHDA lent two 4x4 vehicles to LMPS to ensure safety of contractors, tourists and the public visiting the Project areas. At the end of the Phase, LHDA then donated the two 4x4 vehicles to LMPS for Leribe and Butha-Buthe. LHDA further established a police control at Mphosong to beef security measures along the Project route.
In December, 2001 during construction of Mohale, the LHDA continued to support the LMPS with three additional 4x4 vehicles and police posts, boom gates and shelters. The vehicles were for patrolling the Maseru by-pass now known as Kofi Annan road, Mountain road and Northern access road also known as Nelson Mandela road. The cost of the entire support to the LMPS is approximately M3-million.
