LHDA Disburses Communal Compensation at Bokong and Ha-Katse

The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) will disburse cash payments amounting to over six million Maloti (M 6 018 917) as Communal Compensation to the communities of Bokong, Ha Nkokana, Ha Theko and Ha Kostabole in the Phase 1A area of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project on 16 May 2003.
The compensation payments are split as follows:
- Bokong M2,6 million
- Ha Nkokana M1,1million
- Ha Theko M1,3 million and
- Ha Konstabole M1,million
The compensation which represents a 5 year period is for assets that were affected by the implementation of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project in Phase 1A and this concludes the disbursements of Communal Compensation in Phase 1A.
The payout is being effected in line with the provisions of the Treaty signed by the Governments of Lesotho and the Republic of South Africa in October 1986, and the disbursements will be made on an annual basis based on a fifty-year compensation period.
To date the LHDA has disbursed about eleven million Maloti as Communal Compensation aimed at investment and development projects for the affected and host communities in Phase 1A of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.
