Impoundment of Mohale Reservoir
PRESS RELEASE
Maseru 05 November 2002
The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority wishes to inform the nation that the Mohale Dam Contractor (MDC) lowered the two stop logs to mark the beginning of impoundment of Mohale Reservoir on Friday 1st November, 2002.
The impoundment is being carried out at the start of the rainy season in order to capture as much as possible of the season’s rainfall.
The impoundment marks an important milestone in the implementation of Phase 1B of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. The Mohale Tunnel is expected to be ready for the transfer of water from Mohale Reservoir to Katse Reservoir in a year’s time, and that would complete Phase 1 of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.
People living upstream of Mohale Dam and using the following rivers: Senqunyane, Bokong, Bokoaneng, Jorotane and Likalaneng are advised to start using the bridges to cross such rivers because the levels of water in the rivers will start to rise as a result of the impoundment. This advise is made to avoid accidents, or loss of life to people and livestock.
