LESOTHO HIGHLANDS WATER PROJECT

Compensation to the Affected Communities

The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) today disbursed cash payments amounting to M500,000.00 (half a million Maloti) as compensation to the communities of Ha Molapo, Setlakalleng and Boinyatso villages in the Butha-Buthe district.

The compensation represents a three year (3 year) payment for the communally owned assets that were affected by the implementation of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project activities in Phase 1A.

The affected areas were the ’Muela Dam site and where the Contractor’s Offices were put up during the mobilisation for construction works to be implemented.

The compensation payout is being effected in line with the provisions of the Treaty signed by the Governments of Lesotho and the Republic of South Africa in October 1986 and disbursements will be made on an annual basis.
