Mohale Dam Fills Up

The Mohale Dam started to over-spill at 21h00 in February 13, 2006 for the first time since impoundment in November 2002, signaling attainment of the reservoir's full supply capacity.

The over-spillage that is a result of the current torrential rains is a milestone in the history of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.  The project is now assured of additional water yield ready for conveyance in time of need into the Katse Dam reservoir, as envisaged in sub-phase 1B of the project implementation treaty. The spilling over condition also represents the ultimate test to the dam structure under maximum loading. When 100% full, the dam's volume is 946.9 million cubic metres, while the elevation is 2075 metres above sea level (masl). Having reached the capacity in three years and two months after impounding, the 145 metres high Mohale Dam will go down in history as one of the fastest water harvesting reservoirs of its kind. Dams of its magnitude normally take an average of six years to fill.
