Tshehlanyane National Park [Brochure pdf]                                                               <<..back

This protected area, which covers some 5600ha, lies at the junction of the Ts’ehlanyane and the Holomo rivers on the western scarp of the Front Range of the Maluti mountains. It is reached by a 32 km gravel access road which leaves the main A1 route 3 km south of Butha-Buthe.

The route passes through the village of a Ha Khabo’s and parallels the Hlotse River along a very picturesque valley until it reaches the park entrance.

Some of the finest examples of Leucosidea sericea, Ouhout, or Chichi woodland are preserved at the heart of this area, with a number undergowth plants which are unique to this woodland habitat.  On the banks of the rivers and streams are stands of berg bamboo, which besides being of significant cultural significance to the Basotho people is also a host plant for the endangered butterfly species Mestisella syrinx.

There are also stands of unique montane Fynbos with a high degree of endemism.

Developments and facilities available in the park include picnic areas, campsites (general and exclusive), standing “Safari style” tents, overnight trails huts the (Start/end point of the TNP BNR trail), a series of walks and trails of varying length, as well as pony rides.

Some of the facilities left over from the development of the water transfer tunnel have been converted into a conference/seminar complex with accommodation for 30 overnight visitors.
