'Muela Environmental Education Center and Enviro-Park                  

The ‘Muela Dam forms the tail pond of the ‘Muela Hydropower station, which is in turn part of the greater Lesotho Highlands Water Project.  The dam and it surrounds have been identified as suitable site for the development, in the near future, of a visitor center which will interpret the various aspects of the project.  At this site however a significant emphasis will be placed on the environmental aspects and the center will lie within an Enviro-Park where environmental education activities will be offered.

Currently there are day visitor facilities available, including a small community operated craft center, and braai and view site facilities.

The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) has a mandate of promoting and assisting Government of Lesotho ministries with developments within the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) catchments basins.  Two such developments are environmental conservation and ecotourism, both of which are intimately related to the overall development and use of water and land resources.

Protection and Management of valuable ecosystems within protected areas has been accepted as an approach to achieving a number of goals related to water and resource development in the LHWP Phase 1A area.

To this end contract LHDA #604 was awarded to Earthplan (Lesotho) (Pty) Ltd, a firm of consultants, during 1996.  The overall objective of the contract to the planning, design, implementation and management of the four designated areas for a minimum period of five years.
