Community Participation in the Protected Areas

A major emphasis has, and is continuously being placed on the improvement of focal neighbouring communities in all phases of the developmental processes of the protected areas and their attendant ecotourism developments.

To optimise this process, a series of community Conservation Forums (CCF’s) has been created with the relevant communities and these act as the vehicle for the consultative process.

Benefits to communities from the establishment and management of the protected areas are both of a direct and indirect nature, and include:

  • Employment opportunities during the development and then during the operational stages of the reserves.

  • Entrepreneurial and business opportunities within both park management issues and the tourism market.

  • Sustainable resource management and use , providing for improved environmental conditions.

Sharing in many profits generated from revenue earning activities by means of a community levy.
