Bokong Nature Reserve [Brochure
pdf]
<<..back
 |
This reserve which lies at the head of the
Mafika-lisiu pass; reaching an altitude of 3090masl; contains some good examples
of afro-alpine wetland sponges which are in the sources of the Bokong river and
the Lepaqoa stream. The Lepaqoa stream drops over a spectacular waterfall in front of the Visitor Centre which
is now nearing completion.
|
|
There are excellent opportunities here to view the rare and endangered bearded
vulture, and a number of other bird species endemic to the afro-alpine zone.
Reasonable populations of vaal rhebuck still occur on the plateau grass
and heartlands, and the whole area abounds with colonies of the endemic ice rat
which despite it’s cute appearance is heavily predated by all the small and
medium mammalian carnivores and avian raptors in the area.
|
 |
Besides the visitor center, an overnight trails
camp is available a start/end point for a three day trail for the hardened
mountain hiker along the high plateau “Roof of Africa” to the Ts’ehlanyane
National Park some 40 km to the North. A series of day trails and educational walks is being also available; the use of a
local guide is strongly encouraged as the weather in these high altitude areas
is very unpredictable; and it also provides much needed employment for the local
highland dwellers.
